Battle Report Sisters of Battle vs Ulthwe Eldar

Last Sunday I managed to get in a game versus my mate Ross and his Ulthwe Eldar.  You can find his blog HERE.  I took some photos of the game with the intention of doing up a battle report, which I have done, but the following should be stated first:

Yes I know the lighting is bad, I will bring down more lights next time.
Yes my camera work is shaky, I will try using a timer next time, and failing that, fork out the cash for a tripod.
Battle Chronicler prefers a North/South engagement, not the East/West layout that I used which causes labels to switch constantly.
I will endeavour to get better starting photos for the map in the future.

With that out of the way, this batrep has been done using Battle Chronicler which I hope to use again in the future.  It took me a while to create the units and learn how to use it, but now that I've created my army, it will take me less time in the future.  The actual diagrams took less than an hour after I''d created the unit and map etc.

Armylists:
Witch Hunters - Sister of St Joseph
Eldar - Ulthwe

Deployment
Ross won the roll for choosing sides and opted for me to choose, I picked the side with the pig pen for some extra cover for my guardsmen.  I deployed with my armoured elements split into two groups backed up by an Exorcist each.  The Guard platoon deployed centrally to provide covering fire and to old the objectives located near my deployment area.  The Canoness and Seraphim deployed behind my North flank Rhinos to help push through onto the objectives there.  Ross deployed his War Walkers and Dark Reapers opposite my armoured forces on the Northern flank.  His Wave Serpents with the Storm Guardians, Dire Avengers and Farseer deployed centrally hoping to swing to either flank.  The Wraithlord, Wraithguard and Defender Guardians deployed on the Southern flank.

Ross' Ulthwe deployed.

Turn 1
Ross failed to steal the initiative, so I began my first turn by rolling forward with my Rhinos, popping their smoke launchers as they went to reduce the impact of incoming fire (I will need to create some sort of smoke token for BC).  The Seraphim and Canoness jumped up behind the Rhinos, heading towards the Dark Reapers and War Walkers.  The Guard squad to the North pushed up into the first floor of the building, and the Exorcists manoeuvred for optimal firing positions.  I started by firing both Exorcists into each of Ross' Wave Serpents and in a wave of luck, wrecked the Storm Guardians' ride, pinning the unit, and exploding the other containing the Dire Avengers and Farseer (I also need some crater markers).  The guard unit then ran to the top of their building for a good firing position, and the Seraphim ran for some extra cover.  My Guardsmen failed to hit the Wraithlord with their missile launchers.

With an abysmal start, Ross went to work on trying to bring the game back in his favour, pushing hard up on the Southern flank whilst the War Walkers ducked out from behind their building ready to fire on the oncoming transports.  Between the Wraithguard and Wraithlord, he managed to immobilise and stun one Rhino on the Southern flank, but the Walkers only managed to stop my Immolator from shooting next turn.  The Dark Reapers shot at the Seraphim but they were saved by Spirit of the Martyr.

An Exorcist lines up the Wraithlord.

Turn 2
With Ross' forces now committed on the Southern flank, and looking at what I had to face them, I decided to pull back my forces to give my other units more time to whittle them down.  The second BSS squad's rhino pulled back behind the building whilst the first squad got out of their damaged vehicle and made a run for the safety of the building.  On the Northern flank I pushed up aggressively and disembarked my units ready to fire whilst the Seraphim jumped up behind ready to counter attack.  Between Exorcist two and my Guard platoon I was able to take out the Wraithlord threatening the Southern flank, whilst Exorcist 1 and my Celestian squad managed to either shake or weapon destroy all of the War Walkers leaving them defenceless for the next turn.  BSS 3 opened up on the Dark Reapers knocking them out with bolters and flamers.

The Sister Squad removes the Dark Reapers from the equation in a storm of fire and flame.

Ross was really under the pressure now, but kept on coming.  His Wraithguard moved up ready to assault the immobilised Rhino supported by the Dire Avengers and Defender Guardians.  His War Walkers also moved up along the with the Storm Guardians on the Northern Flank.  Shoot mainly consisted of trying to whittle down BSS 1 and fleeting with the Storm Guardians.  The Wraithguard charged the Rhino blowing it up meanwhile the War Walkers and Storm Guardians charged BSS 3 in a hopes to break it and remove a valuable scoring unit from that flank, however the sisters held.

 The charge of the Ulthwe.

Turn 3
In my turn I shot up the Wraithguard some more, hoping to reduce them with the Exorcists, but a timely fortune and their high toughness kept them strong.  On the Northern flank things went a little better with the Seraphim and Celestians charging the War Walkers bringing them down in a hail of Eviscerator attacks and causing the Storm Guardians to flee.

 Sisters push the Guardians back.

With not many options left Ross charged the Wraithguard into BSS 2 hoping to break them, but in a score of abysmal dice rolls neither side managed to score any wounds.  We decided to call it there as it was getting a little late and with the Wraithguard not likely to go anywhere any time soon, not much was likely to change.

Conclusion
I realised early on that I had made a mistake in my deployment, as my goal was to push through with the attack on the Northern flank, whilst using the Southern flank as a I diversion/optimistic attack designed to hold up the enemy or take a lightly defended objective.  However I only had minimal scoring units on the Northern flank and had the game not gone so well for me, I may not have had enough bodies left alive to claim the objectives.  As it was, BSS 3 was whittled down to only four members, and came close to being swept away.  Ross failed to use cover enough in his deployment which led to the loss of his mobility early on which really crippled him.  We discussed this after the game along with a few tweaks for the list, mainly to drop the Dark Reapers for either a unit of Jetbikes or some Rangers for taking down MC's.

Please feel free to leave any feedback on the format of the report or any suggestions on improvements for next time.

ANZAC Day

Well I just got home from going to the Dawn Service with my brother.  For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corp) Day is our nations day for remembering those who have served our country.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Bray Park Alliance

Since moving down to Brisbane, I really haven't had much time (read as almost none) to do any wargaming related activities.  I did however make it down to the local club for my area, Bray Park Alliance.  I had a chat to several of the members and even got in a small 1000 point game against a Tau player.

The facilities there are pretty nice with good tables, reasonable scenery and a nice hall to play in.  I'm heading around again this weekend to get in a practice game against "cassa" from WargamerAU who I talked wit last time.  Sisters versus Tyranids which should be good, and if were quick I might even get in a second game.

To deal with my lack of painting time, I've brought up some paints and models, although I have yet to dig out my paint brushes, but hopefully I can get some paint on figures tonight or tomorrow and just do a little each night.

Is there a point in time when you have too much?

As regular followers will know, I recently moved from Rockhampton to Brisbane in order to further my career a bit and try new things.  Doing so however meant that I needed to pack up all of my wargaming related stuff into boxes.  This wasn't too hard as I generally kept them in smallish boxes, so I just reorganised them a bit and them put them into larger packing boxes more suitable for moving.

Yeah that's most of my wargaming related stuff, although I realised that I'd mixed two more boxes and two army cases from that photo after I took it.  The only non wargaming related stuff in there is the Tai Chi swords and a fibreglass bow.

Whilst I was away looking for houses, I received the first stage of my Crimson Fists force including:
5 AoBR Terminators
2 AoBR Dreadnoughts
10 AoBR Tactical Marines
10 Terminator Shoulder Pads
5 Thunder Hammers
5 Storm Shields

This now gives me all of the infantry except for the Command Squad/Captain so I might get to put some stuff together soon.  Sorry for the poor quality of the photo, I will have to search out better lighting.

Brisvegas and other stuff

Picture courtesy of my friend Elise

If you're wondering where I am and why I've dropped off the radar for a bit, well it's because I've been busy relocating from Rockhampton to Brisbane, a distance of over 650 kilometres.  Just a hop and a skip for those of you who live in Australia, but probably more substantial to those living across the pond.  If you've been following recent events, you'd know that Rockhampton was isolated for over two weeks by massive flooding, then Brisbane suffered heavy flooding doing massive damage, and to finish it off, North Queensland was hit by the largest cyclone ever recorded anywhere on Earth.  I chose a great time to try and relocate my belongings to another city...

All of this has been done for a bit of change of pace, including starting a new job which is a fair bit more hectic than my previous job.  We've just recently found a place to live permanently too, so I have to head back to Rockhampton in a week and a half to go and load all of our belongings, including the cat into a truck for the long drive down.  Unfortunately I only realised today that this means that I can't attend Quartermaster 1 to which I have already bought tickets for Sarah and I.  A damn shame as I was looking forward to it.

Hopefully I might be able to squeeze in some painting somewhere to add some more hobby content to the blog, or perhaps a batrep or two in the coming weeks, but time will be tight.  Until then, stay safe, and keep an eye out for giant cyclone monsters that look like the picture from the start.

Blog Cull

From time to time I go through the list of blogs that I follow (currently 61 of them).  I tend to mainly get rid of those that I either no longer read, or rarely read anymore, just to reduce the amount of crap that I have to filter through when I check for updates.  I also go through and generally remove any blog that hasn't been posted to in over 6 months, just to remove the dead wood.  So if you're a bit behind on your blog posts then I suggest you put pen to paper/fingers to keyboard and post an update just to keep your blog ticking over.

If anyone is reading this thinks I might be interested in following their blog, post it in the comments and I'll check it out.  You might find yourself with a new follower.

Crimson Fists - Purchasing

So I figured that I'd go through how I'm assembling this army on the cheap for the benefit of others who are trying to collect an army whilst being frugal.  Here in Australia I've found that there are three easy ways to get cheap miniatures.

1. Trade/Buy Second Hand
Chances are you can often pick up what you're after for a good price if you wait around for it.  Perusing places like the WAU Buy, Swap & Sell forum can often net you a good bargain or two.  Other places are checking through what people have brought along to sell at tournaments or the local club.

2. Ebay
I buy a lot of my models off Ebay.  Almost all of my RT Eldar army has come from Ebay and hunting for deals.  I have found that the best bet is to watch a few sales to get an idea for how much things go for.  Put in you bid 48-24 hours beforehand and just walk away.  If you get outbid, just walking away is often the best option.  Early in the piece I found myself in bidding wars for stuff and ended up paying way more than I intended.  I use Hoard o' Bits for most of my bits orders but shop around for the best deals.

3. Buying Overseas
Due to the strong Australian dollar at the moment, buying overseas is extremely cheap.  I can buy stuff often for 50% off Australian RRP by buying from overseas sellers like Maelstrom and Wayland Games.

So lets look at how I'm assembling the force along with my initial guesses at costs:
Captain - $0 - Model to come from the Command Squad boxed set.  Halberd to be converted to represent a Relic Blade (Possibly from Chaos Knights models with iconography removed).
Librarian - $0 - I have an existing model so no need to source one.
Command Squad - $25 - To be purchased from Maelstrom Games, 4x scratch built Storm Shields, 1x Meltagun (bits box)
Drop Pods - $90 - 3x Maelstrom
Dreadnought Drop Pods - $5 - Scratch Built with drop pod bits added on for detail.
Assault Terminators - $35 - AoBR Terminators, 5x Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields, 10x Shoulder Pads (Ebay)
Dreadnoughts - $30 - 2x AoBR Dreadnought (Ebay), Heavy Flamer conversion (Witch Hunter parts from bits box)
Tactical Squads - $15 - AoBR Tactical Squad (Ebay), BfM Tactical Squad (Existing models)
Scouts - $0 - Existing Models
Land Speeder Storm - $25 - Maelstrom

Land Speeders - $50 - Maelstrom
Other Bits and Pieces - $10 - Transfers etc

That brings me to a total of $285.

Currently I've sourced the following from Hoard o' Bits over a period of three weeks of bidding:
2x AoBR Dreadnoughts - $30.00 + Shipping
AoBR Terminators, 5x Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields, 10x Shoulder Pads - $21.30 + Shipping
AoBR Tactical Squad (Ebay) - $10.50 + Shipping
Transfers - $2.00 + Shipping
Shipping - $5.30

Total: $69.10

This puts me quite a bit under so far, with only the dreadnoughts actually costing my close to my estimation, but I can't save much on the Maelstrom Order.  I do however have some unopened prizes from tournaments that I hope to trade in for a box or two of things that I need.  So far so good, the only downside being that moving means that I'm getting this stuff shipped to my Parent's house in Rockhampton and will have to find a way to get them down to Brisbane after they arrive (which will probably cost more than the shipping costs to get them from the US).
